Last year I was asked by our new principal to take over the mentorship on a student and then another. This is something that is quite unusual that a student switshes between differnt mentors.
The only time thus occurs is when a mentor either quits or there has been a trust issue. Yes some people donot work well together and that is also a student/teacher relationship when it comes to mentoring.
During my five year carrer I have had one student to demand changing to another mnetor from me, and now one asking for me specifically even though I didn't even belong to the correct mentor team.
Well this student is a little special it has a terrible disease it is living with and we have to make special arangements around it. The lastest is "mentor time" that is a designated hour a week I'm supposed to me this student. This student needs to workout at the school gym at least ones a week and well some one (read med) felt this was the perfect time and place to meet. INstead of having the horrible across the desk meeting with me having a notepad and writing down everything we say, why not have an hour at the gym instead?!
Well me being me cannot be at the gym just walking around. The student wants company, not someone sitting of their time with them. So in between the sessions where it needed help I worked out. WE are talking 45 min work ot with low weights half hearted since there were som many things that needed to get storted this time. Why then are my legs and bum litterally killing me after a 1x10 lounges session and 10 min on a bike??? The rest were uppebody of helping the student.....

Hybrids
Sometimes my students ask me questions that I can not answer and there is not enough time (or place) for them to look up the answer during class. In cases like this and if it is something that may be relevant to the topic I promise to look into it for their next class.
I was a subteacher for a colleague before easter break and got a question about crossing horses and zebras with each other, what its called, if they are fertile ect etc. I have now learned they are called a zorse (zebroid).
I have now spent 4 hours reading about animal hybrids and I get more andmore scared what crossings and breedings programs there actually exist.
At the moment it is li/ti-tigon/liger crossings I'm reading up on.
Think I might have to dedicate a full lecture on this!

We have an offer of free accommodation for 4 weeks instead of commuting 2 hrs a day.
We are five students using the offer. Yhea sure the standard is like a not to gran backpackers, but with rooms, you can lock, ok bathrooms (except the leaking roof) and fully equipped kitchen.
Hey I will save my money and stay here

I don't know
I'm friends with some of my students on facebook. Starting to think that was a bad idea.
Oh well I'll see they might be removed faster than what they were accepted.

I feel dirty

I walkedin the store after my yoga class all happy and was planning dinner.
My plan was potato wedges with berneisesauce and then cocholate for dessert.
i was looking as fresh as you do after working out and ran into an old student of mine. For some reason I felt like I was caught with my hand in the cookie jar. Might have bin due to my raggered sweatty apearance and the plan to have greezy greezy food for dinner.....
This was my corner shop! Students are banned from that area (according to me)

Slow down you are moving to fast!
Why am I not surprised that my students think that I set to high speed on lectures occasionally...

I guess as with manythings I want so much done and sometimes it goes a little to fast when teaching.

Deadline
at 11 AM tomorrow ALL the grades have to be set.
At the moment I'm holding out waiting for onemore assignment fromo a student. Then the grades for my seniors will be set.

This when you feel like GOD, but its so hard. To give them the right grade based on their work and commitment to the course. No personal judgement is allowed when setting the grades. Some are easy, others are so so hard.
An easy grades is a student that has handed in and done everything on the same level throughout the course.
A hard is were the grades from different tasks varies from Top to bottom, but also the students that have SOOO high ambitions, but their marks are not even close in being able to reach that grade (these rip my heart out occasionally).
Yes this is the bit where so much rest on my shoulders and you want to make sure you have made the right decision.

The reality of work
Thursday and friday this week I have bin spending in Uppsala and its always hard to leave work and let your colleages take care of your classes and students.
On thursday afternoon I got a phonecall from a colleague that shock me to the core. I now these are the kind of phonecalls that can occur when you are dealing with teenagers and all the problems that s in their world. I actually skipped class and sat out in the sun ( yes it was making an appearance) talking to a friend how to deal with it and well just needed to talk to somebody.

Some students you get closer to than others due to cetain events, but when you get a phonecall that you have bin suspectig will come one day its still a chock and hard to belive that it actally has happened. It took several houors until I got the full picuture, but until then I had the worst senarios painted up in my mind. Its things like this that sometimes make me wonder of my choice of career!
Its just improtant to remember that this is not an everyday occrence( more commo in hgh school unfortunately). The students is not dead, but that still doesn't make this situation less desperate and hard to deal with.Coming to work on monday will be hard just becaused I wasn't there when it all happened and other colleagues have had to deal with so much during the last two days. I now I'm not responsible, but still feel like it. It was in my class things happened and that my colleague that I have the class with had to deal with this alone ( Yes she had help by people, but still)....

Hovfjället skiing trip with students
just feel that this picture sums it all up.

We had a blast. The students were happy, me and my colleague were happy and weather was ok.
It was snowing non-stop, but no wind so that made it ok.
I tried the snowboard for the first time i 10 years and did alright. After hardly being able to standon the board I made it down all the slopes more or less witout falling. Even managed some black ones without a single fall (those were rare).
What I did managed though was:
1) Run over a poor lady when I fell
2) Hit a liftpole on my way up with the lift (twice, need to work on the board control going up)
3) Fall off the slope and had to crawl back up to make it down the slope in the right angle (not in the offpist ditch that I ended up in) Ofcourse busted by students when coming cawlig back up on all four.
4) make a HUGE tumble in a slope (thought I was gonna break all my bones in my body)
ut yhea had so much fun, and the students were just awsome so sweet and welllets just say they had a blast at their teachers falls in random places (ot always graceful).

Now y body is sore, ut not as bad as I thought it would e.

Qoute of the day
Working as a teacher you get som egreat comments, some not so great comments and then we have the comments that ypu don't now what to do with.
I'm actually gonna give some of those here on the blog for you to taste on and see how long you managed to keep the face straight.
We have learned never to give these to fellow co-workers when they might have to be serious or other students may be around. Many might just be a solution that they think is true, others are not so thought through excuses and well then there is those that I don't really now what we are gong to label them as.

This was found in an english paper.
What do you think this is and translates into in swedish??
